About this work
The Clivia is not a random subject. The plant has been in the family for more than seventy years and has, over time, become a fixed presence in the work of Henk van Dam: seen again each time, built up differently each time.
Where a botanical painting often seeks precision, Henk van Dam does the opposite: leaf shape and flower colour are reduced to plane, rhythm and composition, built up in layers of acrylic, chalk and charcoal that remain partly visible.
