Markervaart
The Markervaart is the crossing to De Woude, the island in the Alkmaardermeer where Henk van Dam lives. Crossing, shore and water return as a fixed rhythm in his work.
About this work
Anyone living on De Woude crosses the Markervaart to reach the island. That daily rhythm of shore, water and the other side has become a fixed starting point for Henk van Dam: not a romantic waterscape, but a composition of horizon lines, reflection and space.
As with all his work, the paintings arise in layers. Acrylic, chalk and charcoal are applied, sanded away and built up again, leaving traces of earlier layers visible.
