Model, colour blocks reclining
A reclining model rests on one elbow, the head sketched loosely with a few brushstrokes of hair and a summary face. The torso is built from broad blocks of colour: deep red and ochre-brown dominate, with a flat panel of navy blue and a touch of yellow-green worked in, like a checked pattern indicated with a free hand. Blue chalk circles the form and re-traces the contours of leg and body, letting sketch and paint run into one another. The background stays bare white paper, making the warm blocks of colour glow all the more.
