Markervaart – the ferry
The ferry across the Markervaart, the familiar crossing between shore and island, captured in colour and rhythm. On this small canvas the ferry is reduced to a dense weave of planes: a bright yellow deck, a dark green block for the wheelhouse, pink and ochre strokes catching the light on the water. The paint is applied thickly with the palette knife, with traces of earlier layers showing through the top layer. Toward the bottom of the canvas the water itself is painted darker and rougher, blue and purple rubbing against each other — the daily crossing, not as a story but as a sensation of colour and movement.
