Markervaart – the crossing
The ferry in motion on the water — a moment Henk van Dam has revisited countless times. On the ferry a row of small figures waits, loosely set down in dabs of paint, while the ferry itself fades into a pale, purplish-outlined shape. Below the horizon the canvas opens into a yellow band and a wild, red-orange reflection on the water, where the colours of the sky and the ferry run into one another. It is one of the many times Henk van Dam paints this crossing — each time with a slightly different light, a different temperature of colour.
