The same Clivia, seen again: leaf and flower reduced to plane and rhythm. Here the canvas is darker and denser than in the other versions — the leaves are deep green and navy blue, applied thickly with the palette knife, with the orange-red flowers as the only bright note at the top. Toward the bottom the plant almost disappears into the darkness of the pot. It is the most sombre, most restrained of the Clivia studies, in which the familiar plant becomes less a portrait than a mood.
