Summer
Summer on the island: flowering sorrel in gouache, airy and light in colour. The canvas is built from broad horizontal bands: a grey, clouded sky at the top, a warm peach and orange tone in the middle evoking the sorrel in bloom, and a cooler blue-green band below for the water or grass. The paint is applied wet-in-wet, letting the colours bleed into each other at the edges. The result is less a landscape than a mood of colour — the sensation of a summer's day, without fixing a single recognisable detail.
