Winter
Winter on De Woude, part of a series of four seasons in gouache. The whole canvas is immersed in a cool, clear turquoise and pale blue, with a single dark stroke of navy marking the far shore. At the bottom, the white of the paper itself becomes part of the composition — snow or ice, barely painted. It is the lightest and most transparent of the four season canvases, in which the cold is felt above all through what is absent: colour, weight, movement.
