The trader has stepped away
The trader has stepped away — an empty stall, captured in gouache. All that remains here is the donkey, with its loaded saddlebags in red, blue and yellow, standing beneath a dark, solidly painted tree. The human figure is absent: no trader, no customer, only the animal and its load. It is the mirror image of the other market sketch — not the trader himself, but the sign of his absence.
