White-tailed eagle
A white-tailed eagle over the water — one of the few animal studies in his work. The bird is barely recognisable as an animal: a large, white shape with a thin blue contour line floats against a dark, almost black background shot through with deep red. It is less a portrait of the eagle than a sensation of something large and still standing out against a threatening sky or expanse of water. As in the Markervaart canvases, Henk van Dam is not concerned with the exact silhouette, but with the force of the contrast.
